The article discussed on the advancement of
technologies among seafarers. Developing an autonomous vessel is the solution
to making sea travel safer, reduce operating cost and to ultimately reduce
carbon footprint. An autonomous ship would mean that it manoeuvres according to
software data input. Remote ships are where these vessels are being manned by
individuals on land. In 2018, Rolls-Royce exhibit their attempt towards a fully
automated ferry in its efforts to be fuel-efficient by following a better
planned route, labour-saving by cutting the number of crews on-board that forms
up to 30% of the operating cost. Also eliminating human error which adds up to
“between 75% to 96% of maritime accidents”.
The article does provide a useful platform for our
research project in implementing self-navigating ships to improve efficiency by
minimizing the fuel usage, also promoting for a greener environment. While the
research article only implements this technology, the article still provides
useful information and statistics about the potential of artificial intelligence
being implemented in a much larger scale, cargo ships. This article serves as a
relevant aspect for our research project, SmartNav.
